How a Bill Becomes an Act
FOP Legislation

There are many things which have contributed to the FOP's successful legislative efforts over the years. The fact that the Fraternal Order of Police speaks for law enforcement is important. The active involvement and hard work of thousands of FOP members building relationships with their representatives in Columbia and Washington opens doors and convinces legislators to do the right thing when it comes to protecting society's protectors. And certainly having an experienced, well-positioned lobbyist who's known as an advocate for law enforcement is a key part of FOP's success.

The South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police retains a full-time lobbyist to make your voice heard in the South Carolina Legislature. Our lobbyist monitors and consults with other interest groups involved in law enforcement policy, advocacy and political activities on behalf of South Carolina's FOP membership.

Legislative Topics

Dual Office Holding
STATUS: This initiative did not pass. H.3511 and H.3804, sponsored by Rep. David Umphlett (R-Berkeley), would have allowed ALL officers to run for local public offices. An amendment would have been introduced to exclude County Sheriffs. The House of Representatives passed our bills, but the Senate would not hear it.

EXPLANATION: A Constitutional Amendment that would allow ALL law enforcement officers to run for and hold local public offices.
