On Thursday, May 4, 1978, warrants Detective Joel Robertson, age 39, as traveling on Highway 17 near Whitehall Terrace. Mark Prelip, age 23 was traveling the opposite direction through an area of highway that was under construction. The vehicles collided head on killing both instantly.
A plaque bearing Joel M. Robertson's name is displayed at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame in Columbia.
