William Thomas Cribb

William Thomas Cribb

Charleston County Police Department

Friday, November 15, 1974

Policeman Cribb, 29, was shot and killed when he and another officer interrupted an armed robbery in a Folly Road supermarket while off duty. The officers were approached by a store employee, who told them of the robbery in progress. Armed with his service revolver, Policeman Cribb entered the store and grappled with one of the suspects, who had been forcing an employee to empty a safe in a small office cubicle. Apparently unaware of the other suspect elsewhere in the store, Policeman Cribb was struck down when the other suspect opened fire. The other officer, who was unarmed, retrieved Policeman Cribb’s weapon and fired at the fleeing robbers who escaped without injury and with $5000 of the store’s money.

The three suspects escaped and remain at large.

Patrolman Cribb was survived by his wife.

William Thomas Cribb's name has been engraved at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC. His name can be located on panel 29, E -14.

A plaque bearing William Thomas Cribb's name is displayed at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame in Columbia.
