Policeman Smith was killed in an automobile accident while responding to a robbery in progress call.

Policeman Smith lost control of his cruiser on the ramp of the Highway 61 overpass over Highway 17 about 1:40 am. The patrol car struck the abutment.

Policeman Smith had been responding to a report of a robbery in progress at the Riverview Holiday Inn. The reported robbery was later found to be a less serious larceny.




Wesley John Smith's name has been engraved at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC. His name can be located on panel 42, E -17.

A plaque bearing Wesley John Smith's name is displayed at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame in Columbia.
