Lance Corporal Bailey, 27, was killed in a vehicle accident while attempting to stop a car for speeding on I-85 in Greenville County. Corporal Bailey was attempting to catch up to the speeding vehicle when another car pulled in front of his cruiser. He immediately attempted evasive action to avoid striking the second vehicle, causing his cruiser to skid. The cruiser exited the highway down an embankment, striking a stand of trees. Lance Corporal Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene.
He had been with the agency for six years and is survived by his wife, parents, and sister.
David Travis Bailey's name has been engraved at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC. His name can be located on panel 15, W-22.
A plaque bearing David Travis Bailey's name is displayed at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame in Columbia.
