Sergeant Pope was killed in an automobile accident as he was ending a high speed pursuit. His patrol car left the roadway, struck some trees, and burst into flames. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to serious head injuries he sustained when he was ejected from the vehicle.

Sergeant Pope had served with the agency for 6 years. He is survived by his wife and 5-year-old son.



Carlton Patrick Pope's name has been engraved at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC. His name can be located on panel 50, W -20.

A plaque bearing Carlton Patrick Pope's name is displayed at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame in Columbia.
