Cottageville Police Department

Saturday, March 25, 1989


Chief Shelton was shot and killed by two suspects after arresting them following a traffic stop. He had transported the male and female suspects to the police station where the female produced a handgun and gave it to her boyfriend, the male suspect. The boyfriend then shot Chief Shelton several times. Both suspects were later apprehended. The female was acquitted and the male was sentenced to life.



Jerry Wayne Shelton's name has been engraved at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC. His name can be located on panel 52, E -8.

A plaque bearing Jerry Wayne Shelton's name is displayed at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame in Columbia.
